"Hazing is where bullying becomes most clear, or where it is most simply enacted, because you can really see the negative acts form a pattern and you can also see an imbalance of power." - Stuart Green
Definition of Hazing, to include acts that result to physical or psychological suffering, harm, or injury inflicted on a recruit, neophyte, applicant, or member as part of initiation or requirement or continuing membership in a fraternity, sorority, or organization (Sec. 2a).[1]
As a Cadet of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA), it is essential to understand and adhere to Republic Act No. 11053, also known as the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018. This law aims to eliminate hazing as an initiation rite or practice in all fraternities, sororities, and other organizations in the Philippines. As Cadets, we have a responsibility to uphold the values of the PNPA, which includes a commitment to integrity and respect for human dignity.
Under the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018, hazing is strictly prohibited. This includes physical, psychological, or emotional abuse that is inflicted upon an individual as a prerequisite for admission or membership in an organization. The law also makes it illegal to participate in hazing, regardless of whether the individual being hazed consents to the activity. Furthermore, any organization guilty of hazing may face severe penalties, including fines and imprisonment.
As a Cadet of the PNPA, we must foster a culture of respect, inclusivity, and safety within our community. We must not engage in nor tolerate any form of hazing or initiation practices that could harm our fellow Cadets. Instead, we should build a supportive and nurturing environment that promotes teamwork, camaraderie, and mutual respect. We should also report any hazing incidents or other misconduct to the proper authorities and proactively prevent such activities. In conclusion, the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018 is a critical piece of legislation that aims to protect the dignity and well-being of individuals from the harmful effects of hazing. As Cadets of the PNPA, it is our responsibility to uphold this law and create a safe and inclusive community that fosters the development of future leaders who embody the values of integrity, respect, and accountability.
As a future officer, implementing the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018 in the community is essential to ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals. Our responsibility is to create a culture of respect and inclusivity within our organization. To hold ourselves and our peers accountable for upholding the values of integrity and human dignity. We must also work closely with the proper authorities to report any hazing incidents or other forms of misconduct. Take a proactive role in preventing such activities from happening in the first place. By doing so, we can foster a safe and nurturing environment that promotes the development of future leaders who embody the values of service, honor, and justice.
